Mindfulness - What Is Mindfulness?

quote-04I had the privilege of completing my teacher training with Zen Master Daizan Roshi who continues to be a guiding force in my life.

Mindfulness practice was originally developed in East Asia and has a strong association to meditation practices. The most frequently cited method of mindfulness training was developed by Prof Jon Kabat-Zinn in the late 1970s as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme. My personal practice is heavily influenced also by the teachings of Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh.

Essentially, mindfulness based training is aimed at teaching people to practice bringing a deep awareness into the present moment without judgment whilst showing kindness to ourselves and others. With regular practice this can result in a sense of grounding and balance to life, enabling you to develop skills that will support an improvement in your way of living and realise your innate connection to the world and universe.

Mindfulness has been about for centuries but more recently is gaining significant credibility due to a strengthening evidence base, brain imaging, neuroscience research, and successful application in the corporate and public sector world e.g. Google, Microsoft, NHS, Education and other areas.

I have been practising mindfulness for many years now and have honestly found it to be of great benefit. I can work with you in a number of ways  either 1-1 guided mindfulness sessions or as part of group work. I deliver an 8 week Health and Well-being Mindfulness Course ( helpful for health related issues such as stress, anxiety, pain, depression) and also a Deep Insight Course ( helpful for those who want to work more deeply and in particular with energy work) I have also completed the YouthMindfulness Teacher Training Course and can work with children from age 7 upwards.

In its simplest terms it is:

  • Paying Attention on purpose

  • Being aware of your thoughts and observing them in a curious non-judgemental way.

  • Having a beginners mind.

  • Being fully present in the moment (this moment is the only moment available to us).

  • Switching off auto-pilot.

  • Practice “being” rather than “doing”

  • Learning to pause and respond rather than automatically react

Some Benefits: deep sense of contentment, better coping skills, increased empathy & compassion, better relationships, reduced pain, anxiety, stress, more focused, working smarter not harder.

By following my guidance you will be able to connect with your subconscious mind at a level currently unknown to you or which you are unaware off. By working at a subconscious level we can unearth patterns of resistance and free up the ability for change to happen which ultimately changes your view of yourself and the world. Our relationship with thought is extremely powerful and when we align with the negative bias that exists in all of us, it can be difficult to remain open to the potential of positive change and behaviours in our life.

I can work with you using a range of techniques and approaches which will positively impact on your fears, anxieties, self image, phobias, self esteem and point the way to a more present, grounded and contented way of being.

Neurolinguistic Programming is really all about changing our perception of our internal and external world. Our inner state is so important in shaping how we see and interpret things, comments, situations, others actions, judgements and how our interpretations impact on us. NLP can be used alone or in conjunction with other approaches such as hypnotherapy and can help with many issues such as phobias, weight loss, stopping smoking, anxiety, mild to moderate depression, indecisiveness and much more.

As Richard Bandler (one of the founders of modern NLP) puts it so well, NLP is about “finding the difference that makes the difference” Let’s find your difference and change your life.

Life Coaching

Happiness is an inside job. Your well being is not dependent on the outside world. Sounds pretty simple yes? We all know it’s never that simple. We all know people who seem to have it all sorted. Why can’t you? Well it’s not always obvious but actually you can have it sorted you just need to look in the right place.

That’s where I can help. I can help you to gain clarity, be clear on who you are, operate in the moment, develop your vision, raise your energy level and transform your life. I have been trained by the world renowned Ali Campbell to deliver his 12 week Life Coaching Programme or you might prefer a 2 day intensive which gets right to the hub of the matter quickly and sorts out your life limiting beliefs, behaviours and actions.

Stress Management

quote22After a career spanning 38 years in the NHS, bringing up 3 children and making ends meet over challenging years, I know all about stress.

Stress is often sneaky in that it creeps up on you over time. The warning signs are often missed or excused and we lack the insight to enable us to intervene early and stop the cycle. So if you are not sleeping well, you feel anxious, cant face the thought of another day of huge effort just to function or are in pain and have long standing health issues that have resulted in you being fatigued I can help you.

There are a range of approaches that we can look at that stop stress in its tracks and bring you back to being the best possible version of you. We all get stressed at times, sometimes it can even be healthy stress but when it gets out of hand and our health starts to suffer, we put ourselves at risk of the consequences of prolonged stress such as stroke, cardiac disease, obesity, cancer and a shorter lifespan. Yes that’s pretty scary but it’s true.

You can change this; it doesn’t have to be this way.

I have been practising yoga for more than 20 years. I completed the Yoga Scotland Foundation 1 year course and have been on several yoga retreats in the UK and abroad. I plan to complete my teacher training and meanwhile will be incorporating elements of yoga such as breath work (Pranayama) and mind and body awareness into my coaching skills as part of the holistic approach I use. I find both mindfulness and yoga extremely beneficial to my overall health and well being and I would be delighted to share some of these benefits with you.

As a senior NHS manager for the last 15 years I am very experienced in redesigning services and have a creative and lateral thinking approach to problem solving. I have a strong Organisational Development track record and have been in charge off and responsible for the delivery of many multi-million pound service changes within the NHS.

I am a people person and I am able to work with others to empower ownership and contribution to a new way of doing things, focused on building person centred services. I am an advocate of person centred approaches to health and care and have many transferable skills which can be utilised across a variety of services.

I have been a participant on all of the courses I deliver and continue to receive supervision and coaching myself from my teachers and ensure that I comply with the relevant requirements to stay up to date in my practice. I am aware of the shift in myself since I undertook these courses, so I know they work. The people I have worked with have also seen shifts to their wellbeing and life and that for me is the most important measure.
